Helping People Change: What You Can Do to Make or Break the Therapeutic Alliance

Helping people change involves skills in developing and maintaining a good therapeutic alliance with clients. This presentation will highlight a variety of techniques and engagement strategies that can enhance a therapeutic alliance.  It will also cover clinical terms that are used in documentation, and treatment that reveal negative attitudes likely to inhibit and even end a therapeutic relationship with clients.

Participants will be able to

  1. Review what a therapeutic alliance involves in helping people change.

  2. Apply engagement strategies to identify what the client wants and stages of change.

  3. Identify clinical terms, psychological constructs and diagnostic categories that can be misused and inhibit alliance-building.
